Get Cloud Backup installed

If your Rackspace Cloud Servers have our Managed Service Level, they’ll come with Rackspace Cloud Backup pre-installed. If not, check out our easy instructions on how to install Cloud Backup on your Cloud Servers

Start protecting your business

Choose the files and folders from your Cloud Server that you want to back up. Manually run a backup or create a regular schedule. Add AES-256 encryption for added protection.

Protect your business

If you’re a developer or a business owner, preparation for the unexpected is crucial. Rackspace Cloud Backup protects the important files powering your website or application, ensuring your business is safeguarded. If something should go wrong and a hard drive fails or you lose files, we have the ability to rapidly restore files to help you get back to regularity quickly.

Quick and easy-to-use

With the new Cloud Control Panel, file-level backups are easy to create, schedule and manage. In a few short minutes you can start protecting your important files and folders, thanks to Rackspace Cloud Backup’s integration with Cloud Servers and Managed Cloud Servers. Backup restoration is also very simple, thanks to the new control panel. This all ensures you can stop spending excessive time on backups, and spend it on more business critical issues.

Improved cost efficiency

Rackspace Cloud Backup has block-level compression and de-duplication, which means backups are not only more efficient, but reduces storage costs by up to 20 times compared to traditional backups. After your first backup with Cloud Backup, additional backups are incremental, further reducing the required storage and associated costs.

Secure your data

If security is paramount for your business, then enterprise-grade encryption (Advanced Encryption Standard, 256 bit key) is available. When you enable encryption, a passphrase that only you will know will encrypt your data, and because you create your AES-256 encryption key, your data is encrypted before it leaves the server and remains safely encrypted while stored.

With Rackspace Cloud Backup, you pay simple monthly pricing for the servers and storage that you use — no upfront costs or long-term contracts.

    Cloud Servers     Managed Cloud Servers
Charge per Cloud Server   £8 per month*   Included in Managed Service level account fee

File-level backup

Cloud Backup is a file-based backup solution for files and folders, including scheduling, retention and notifications. Built-in compression and de-duplication reduce the amount of data stored, while increasing the speed of subsequent backups and restores and reducing costs. You can restore your backed up data to any Cloud Server running Cloud Backup.

File-level vs. image backups

A common misconception that you should be aware of is that Rackspace does not automatically back up Cloud Servers for you. However, the good news is that Cloud Servers customers have two options for backing their data up:

-Rackspace Cloud Backup is a file-level alternative to backing up the whole server image.
Ideal if you need to search for and restore individual files or folders.

-Image Backups save the server’s operating system, applications and data.
Ideal (and much quicker) if you need to restore an entire server in one go.

Each of the above options suits a different need, so please consider using both techniques (image level and file level) for a more comprehensive backup. In general, if you want to maintain a copy of an image for re-provisioning of a Cloud Server in a single step, then use image backups. If you want the flexibility to manage backups at the file level, then use Rackspace Cloud Backup.

Control Panel

The new Rackspace Cloud Control Panel was built to improve your experience with us. By improving the speed and simplicity of the panel, files can now be restored and managed quickly, whilst it’s now simple to back up specific files and folders, including the ability to specify when and at what frequency to perform each created backup.

Rackspace Cloud Backup Agent

To power Rackspace Cloud Backup, a small software agent must be installed on your Cloud Server. If you run Rackspace Cloud Servers with a Managed Service level, this should already be pre-installed. If you need help with installing the agent, please read our instructions. The intelligent Backup agent knows what data you want to back up and when you want to back that data up, and automatically takes care of it for you. .

Compression and de-duplication

To improve backup times and reduce size and storage costs, Rackspace Cloud Backup includes file compression and block-level de-duplication. The agent will know previous backups and utilises de-duplication technology to only back up changes and new additions, saving time by not replicating previously backed up data. It will then compress the new backup data, and apply the optional AES-256 encryption before any of the data leaves your server. Once the incremental backup is completed, we may additionally compress the files if it reduces the overall size.

Cloud Files data storage

Your backup files are stored in Rackspace Cloud Files and written to three storage disks, all on separate nodes or locations that have dual power supplies, ensuring your backups are well looked after. You can also take advantage of the other features offered by Cloud Files, such as integrated access to the Akamai Content Delivery Network. Find out more details about Cloud Files.
