Managed Exchange Frequently Asked Questions

1. What do I get for £12 a mailbox?

With Managed Exchange from Rackspace you get no implementation or maintenance worries!  You get a dedicated and certified mail support team that is responsible for managing and supporting your Exchange environment and infrastructure 24/7/365.

The Rackspace Managed Exchange high availability configuration enables us to deliver 99.9% application uptime, guaranteed or you are refunded 100% of your monthly fee.  Standard with Rackspace Managed Exchange is our premium spam filtering and anti-virus solution, plus full MAPI compatibility.

There are no set up charges, not even for wireless services.

2. Can I incorporate shared calendaring, contacts and public folders with Managed Exchange?

Of course!  The Rackspace Managed Exchange solution offers collaboration for all Exchange users within the same domain.  You can schedule meetings and share calendars, create contacts in the Global Folder and set up, manage and modify Public Folders within your domain.

3. How do end users access Managed Exchange?

- through a client such as Outlook 2003 w/SP2 or Entourage 2004
- log into https://owa.rackspace.com/ (IE is the preferred browser, Firefox allows limited feature set)
- Terminal Service connection

4. How do end users access Managed Exchange wirelessly?  Is it compatible with Outlook Mobile Access?

There are several ways users can wirelessly access their Exchange mailboxes.  Offerings include BlackBerry Enterprise Server licenses from Research in Motion (RIM); Good Mobile Messaging services and ActiveSync for Windows Mobile devices (including Direct Push technology).  It is also compatible with Outlook Mobile Access (OMA), allowing users access on a browser-enabled wireless internet device.

5. Can we keep the same email addresses that we have now?

Yes, you can keep the same email addresses and it takes just a few simple steps to make it happen.  Your mail and support team can help you through the process.

6. Can I configure email addresses within the same domain to use both Exchange and Rackspace's Noteworthy managed mail services?

Yes, through split domain routing.  It requires us to set up specialised domain routing on our end and should be discussed with a Rackspace mail Support Specialist before implementing.

7. Does Managed Exchange run on a dedicated server for each customer or is it shared?

Rackspace's Managed Exchange runs in a shared environment as it is the most cost-effective way for customers to take advantage of the features of Exchange, while keeping costs to a minimum.  We do offer dedicated Exchange environments as well.  For the differences between Dedicated and Managed Exchange, click here.

8.Can I manage storage allocation sharing on a per user basis, regardless of the domain or is it on a per user basis within the same domain?

Each mailbox is initially provisioned and configured with 1GB of allocated storage space.  Exchange administrators can shift the storage around to any mailbox or Public Folder within the domain through the web-based control panel.  The administrator can also add storage in 1GB increments, which can be assigned and managed through the control panel.

9. What happens when a user approaches their storage quota?

Users receive a warning message when they approach their storage limit and the administrator can also manage the information in the Control Panel.  When their users reaches the limit, they will not be able to send mail, but will still be able to receive it.

10. Is my mail encrypted?

All communication between clients (OWA/Outlook/Entourage) is secure via HTTPS.  By default, mail is not encrypted.  There is a client based third party software available that runs locally, and will encrypt sent and received mail. Rackspace, however, does not provide or support this service and is something that each customer would need to set up and support.

11.Is there a limitation on the number of domains or mailboxes I can host?

There is no limit.  The administrator can request new domains and configure domain aliases whenever they wish.  We also do not place a limit on the number of mailboxes.

12. Are mailbox level restores possible?

We store 14 days worth of all deleted email, and 30 days of deleted mailboxes on the server, so the need for mailbox level restores is eliminated.  Additionally, we guarantee an immediate recovery of items deleted within the last 14 days and 6 hours for items deleted in the last 30 days in a mailbox.

13. Is it possible to provision sub domains in Managed Exchange e.g. mail.domain.com?

It is not possible to configure sub domains within the managed exchange environment.

14. How long should I expect it to take to set up the Managed Exchange Service?

Rackspace will provision your domain in up to 24 hours.  We do suggest planning ahead, scheduling the redirection of your Mail Exchange records, since it can take up to 72 hours for this data to replicate to all the Domain Name Servers on the Internet.  Your Support Team can help you with this process as well as provide you with the necessary documentation.
