Cloud computing growing six times faster than traditional IT

Date: March 8th, 2010

New research is forecasting continued growth in the cloud computing market - a sector already experiencing more rapid growth than traditional in-house IT.

ihotdesk reports that cloud computing is set to become increasingly popular in the coming years, with research firm IDC predicting that the innovation will become a common feature of more firms' IT infrastructures.

Chief analyst and senior vice president at IDC, Frank Gens, said: "Cloud computing adoption is growing at over six times the rate of traditional IT. In 2010, it is quickly moving from early adopters to mainstream organisations."

The findings were confirmed by Michael Friedenberg of IDG Enterprise, who explained that more CIOs are embracing cloud computing as firms are increasingly seeing the savings enabled by the technology in the current economic climate. Cloud computing is also widely accepted as facilitating a greener alternative to traditional IT, helping businesses in the UK and elsewhere to reduce their carbon footprint and comply with upcoming environmental legislation.

To advise businesses and other users on the emerging technology, both companies will be hosting an event examining the future cloud computing industry held in Santa Clara from 13 to 15 June, featuring seminars and discussions from leading experts in the field.

Other research has supported the notion that cloud computing will be increasingly adopted over the coming years, with Mimecast informing IT support users that 62 per cent of firms are planning on rolling out cloud-based solutions in 2010.
