An increasing number of businesses of all sizes are turning to virtualisation as a more efficient and affordable means of handling data backup and recovery.
Writing for Computer Weekly, Ratmir Timashev explained: "The adoption of virtualisation is currently helping IT departments make data backup and recovery much faster and more cost-effective.
"With many virtual machines fitting on a single server, it is much easier and more efficient to maintain a backup environment, and to restore it when needed."
The advent of virtualisation has made continuous data protection (CDP) a reality, as data can now be backed up more easily each time it is altered - something that would previously have required huge amounts of computing resource.
Because virtual machines operate as a single disc file, data and applications running on a virtual server can be easily backed up and recovered as a single image, according to Mr Timashev.
He added: "In a disaster recovery situation this can save hours of time in rebuilding, configuring and deploying IT. This effective disruption of space and time brought about by virtualisation is certainly a step toward a much lower cost, accessible CDP, but it is only one stage in the journey."
Virtualisation is a significant step towards a rapid data recovery model, and as servers become increasingly virtualised - moving away from the present model of physical and virtual servers working together - data recovery times could be reduced to a matter of minutes. This will considerably reduce downtime and data loss, allowing businesses to restore their systems with up-to-the-minute changes still intact.
