Welcome to the cloud solutions configurator. This tool sets out sample architectures for running a number of use cases on the Rackspace open cloud. It's really simple to use:
You'll then see the suggested architecture, products included, and an estimated monthly price. Of course, there are many ways to build solutions on the Rackspace open cloud, so these are just a starting point. If you want to discuss in more detail please get in touch via email, phone or live chat.
Please choose from the options below so we can show you the most suited solution.
This is a basic cloud architecture - a starting point to build on for future applications. Typically, this is the first step our customers take when moving an application to the cloud, using services like Cloud Databases and Cloud Files to replace dedicated hardware such as dedicated database servers and expensive storage arrays. All this comes with Rackspace Fanatical Support.

You need to make sure your website or application can cope with demand, whether it's predictable or not. By putting a Cloud Load Balancer in front of your Cloud Servers, you'll be set up to provide a great experience to your end customers, both now and in the future. Adding more servers as you grow is easy;you don't even need to worry about new IP addresses as you spin servers up and down. Rackspace Cloud Load Balancers have multiple balancing options, and support SSL termination for secure sites and applications. The flexibility provided by Cloud Load Balancers makes them an essential part of any cloud-based solution.

If you're used to running your IT infrastructure using dedicated hardware or using "traditional" web hosting, you'll be familiar with a tiered architecture. Well you can replicate that set-up in the Rackspace cloud, making it quick and easy to scale each tier as needed. Whether it's for your full production environment or test and development, you can set things up just as you need them.

Setting up and running your own database can be a hassle. Maybe you don't have the expertise in-house. Even if you do, you probably want it working on activities that will actually drive your business forwards, not tied up with the day-to-day admin that databases require. Cloud Databases can free up your IT resources, by providing a highly available MySQL database purpose-built and optimized for high performance and scalability. It reduces your operational costs by automating tasks related to deployment, configuration, and patching.

Cloud Monitoring allows you to define a series of "checks" on your infrastructure, including resources outside of Rackspace (you can check anything with an IP address or URL). By choosing when and how alerts should be triggered, you can get on with more important things, safe in the knowledge that we're watching your infrastructure around the clock. If something goes wrong, you'll know about it. And importantly we will too;with our Managed Service level you can use Cloud Monitoring to automatically raise a support ticket to Rackspace, so we can start working on the problem right away.

£2.40/mo

You want to provide the best possible experience to your end customers. By storing the images and media that make up your website or application in Cloud Files, you can take advantage of the Akamai Content Distribution Network. This delivers content at blazing speeds to your end customers, wherever they are in the world. Cloud Files also provides unlimited object storage for server "images" and back-ups.
10GB

£0.70/mo

No matter what your business is, preparing for the unexpected is vital. Cloud Backup protects the important files powering your website or application, ensuring your business is safeguarded. If something goes wrong, or you lose files, you'll have the ability to rapidly restore data and get back on track quickly.

In this example, we are using replicated database servers instead of the Cloud Database platform which allows for more customization. This configuration also shows the power of the asynchronous processing of tasks - basically making each tier that much more modular. All this comes with Rackspace Fanatical Support.

You know how much traffic you've got today, and how to cope with it. But how do you deal with growth, or peaks and troughs in demand? By running your web instance on our Cloud Servers you can easily scale up or down as required - you'll always provide a great service to your customers, but only pay for the infrastructure when you need it. And by connecting Cloud Block Storage to your Cloud Servers you can massively scale your storage without paying for compute power you don't necessarily need. You'll also have the peace of mind of knowing that if a Cloud Server goes down, then your Cloud Block Storage volumes are still there holding your data.

This architecture goes hand in hand with the Content Management - Wordpress, Drupal etc. and Web Application architectures, but uses dedicated hardware for part of the configuration. Customers may often use dedicated servers for database workloads or parts of their application that have a high number of I/O operations, or if they need more customisation than is available on the cloud. RackConnect-based solutions are also used by customers that need to achieve PCI compliance for their application - see the Ecommerce architecture for more on this.

Security is vital for many use cases. You can't afford a security slip;at the very least it could bring down your site and lose you revenue, but worst case it could cost your entire reputation. Cloud Networks enables you to build isolated layer two networks between your Cloud Servers, and remove them from the Public Network (the Internet) and Rackspace Service Network completely. The only way into your infrastructure will be through the paths you control.

This is a high level overview what's possible when customers mix private clouds and public cloud. This example is for customers that want to take advantage of cloud technology, but may still need to maintain an in-house solution. Customers also use private clouds so they have dedicated host machines - eliminating the "noisy neighbour" issue that can sometimes occur with multi-tenant public clouds. The power of OpenStack allows customers to move workloads between their in-house private cloud and the Rackspace cloud without having to change their application to suit a new API. Customers can also link their in-house private cloud to a Rackspace hosted private cloud for the same purpose.

You may want to continue running part of your infrastructure on dedicated hardware. Perhaps you need more customisation, higher levels of guaranteed performance, or just prefer to know parts of your application are running on hardware dedicated just for your business. Depending on your market sector you may have regulatory constraints that prevent you storing confidential data on the cloud, and if you're running an ecommerce operation then typically you'll need to run that part of your application away from the cloud to achieve PCI compliance. RackConnect allows customers to connect their Rackspace dedicated infrastructure to their cloud-based resources, giving you the best of both worlds - dedicated hardware only where you need it, and the flexibility of the cloud for everything else.

You want to take advantage of the power and flexibility of OpenStack, but you need a high degree of control over your cloud. Perhaps for security reasons you're not comfortable in a multi-tenant environment. Rackspace Private Cloud Powered by OpenStack gives you the flexibility to host a private cloud infrastructure on your own premises, in a partner data centre, or at Rackspace. By making use of RackConnect you can seamlessly connect all these environments together and run workloads across them as you need. And best of all, Rackspace can support the whole lot for you.

Ecommerce is a really important use-case, and the life-blood of many businesses who run their infrastructure with Rackspace. One of the most popular ecommerce platforms is Magento, which runs well on a cloud-based solution. This solution also includes a dedicated database server for PCI compliance, and to take full advantage of dedicated computing resources. This use case should be read alongside the Web Application and RackConnect architectures for a complete understanding of this area.

Typically, customers will configure the application to heavily utilise caching, both with Varnish for some static content and Memcached for database query caching. This solution also allows you to quickly scale horizontally for high traffic demands.

If something goes wrong, you'll know about it. And importantly we will too;with our Managed Service level you can use Cloud Monitoring to automatically raise a support ticket to Rackspace, so we can start working on the problem right away.

This architecture shows how a company providing Software as a Service (SaaS) to it's customers can run on the Rackspace open cloud. By using a separate Cloud Load Balancer for each of it's customers, SaaS providers can scale quickly whilst maintaining the level of security customers expect.

It's a simple tool to generate sample architectures for applications you would like to run on the Rackspace open cloud, complete with estimated monthly pricing. If you would like to find out specific details on each product, just click on the product logos.
It's easy, just:
Please note these architectures are just suggestions. There are many ways to architect solutions using the Rackspace open cloud, so for more help please get in touch with us.
Most of our cloud products are priced on an hourly basis. We calculate estimated monthly prices based on an average of 730 hours in a month. Your actual monthly invoice will vary depending on the number of days in any given month, and is also effected by whether you run your architecture consistently, or scale some elements up or down during the month.
All prices are based on our core cloud service level. If you choose a Managed Service Level this will increase the monthly price of some products, however others such as Cloud Monitoring and Cloud Backup are included at no additional charge. Please contact us if you wish to explore the Fanatical Support available with a Managed Service Level in more detail.
Some of these architectures are based on a hybrid cloud approach, using Rackconnect to combine open cloud and Managed Hosting products. There are many variables that determine the price of our Managed Hosting products, so please contact us for a quotation.
This tool currently highlights some of the most popular cloud use cases, but of course there are many others. We'll be adding more use cases going forwards, but for now if the use case you need isn't on here then please get in touch. We're here to help.
